Namibian police in Ndiyona settlement in Kavango East region are investigating the death of an off-duty officer who was run over by a truck in the early hours of last week on Friday.
Constable Laurentius Haingura (39) worked at Ndiyona Police Station as a shift supervisor.
The truck driver, Maybin Chonka (39) from Chililabombwe in Zambia’s Copperbelt, was arrested after reporting the accident at Divundu police checkpoint, about 80 km from the crash site.
He was denied bail after making his first appearance at Rundu Magistrates Court on Monday and his case has been adjourned to December 7, 2022 for further police investigation.
According to the police, the deceased appeared to be mentally unstable a few hours before the accident.
The accident occurred Friday morning around 4:50 am in the locality of Ndiyona, along the Trans-Caprivi highway.
“The driver did not stop the vehicle after the accident and did not render any assistance to the injured person,” the police report said.
It is alleged that the deceased reported to the night service on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at approximately 9:45 p.m. After the shift change, he allegedly pulled his duty pistol from the charging desk safe, walked out, and fired two bullets into the air, the report said.
