Van driver crashes into his house, causing “significant damage”, official says

A van driver slammed into the vehicle at a house in Bayport on Friday evening, causing “extensive damage”, according to a Suffolk County fire and rescue official.

The driver “self-extricated” from the truck but was not injured, and an email statement from Jamie Atkinson, deputy coordinator of the Suffolk fire, rescue and emergency services, did not not specified if the house on the Montauk Expressway and Snedecor Avenue was occupied at the time.

The Bayport Fire Department and community ambulance responded to a call around 10:55 p.m., where rescuers found “significant damage,” the email read. “The structure was temporarily stabilized due to the damage,” according to the email, which did not name the driver or provide the cause of the crash.

Islip Town has placed fences to protect the area from foot traffic. Atkinson wrote in the email that all units had been vacated by 1:30 a.m. and the Montauk Expressway had been reopened.
