LONG VALLEY, NJ – A celebration of life and funeral is planned at St. Luke Parish in Long Valley on Thursday and Friday, in memory of Dr. Christopher Muenzen.
Muenzen, 66, died suddenly in Helena, MT on September 21, according to his obituary.
After his retirement he worked in an “acting position in a VA hospital in the west,” his obituary said, KTVH reporting that Muenzen was beaten and killed by a driver who was supporting his van from a parking space in Helena, who apparently did not see Muenzen.
Muenzen, KTVH reported, was employed at Fort Harrison VA Medical Center at the time of his death.
Lewis and Clark Sheriff-Coroner Leo Dutton told local media that Muenzen’s death was attributed to “multiple blunt injuries, the way is an accident.”
KTVH did not report the name of the 36-year-old driver who struck Muenzen or whether an investigation is underway, but said police in Helena said it “did not appear to be alcohol or alcohol. drugs were involved in the accident “.
Muenzen was born in 1955, raised in Rahway and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Metuchen. He graduated from Cornell University with an MA from Yale University, having studied medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
While doing his residency in Washington DC, Muenzen returned to New Jersey to begin his practice in Long Valley, which he had for more than three decades, his obituary noted.
“Well regarded as an expert in diagnostics, his care plans were known for their straightforward but insightful orders and advice,” Muenzen’s obituary read.
In Long Valley, Hunterdon Healthcare – Muenzen’s practice at 59 East Mill Road – changed its name in January 2021 to Hunterdon Medical Associates, with a subsequent press release in February indicating that Muenzen planned to remain as a supplier.
Muenzen is survived by his wife Diane, their four children, his grandson and his extended family, including eight siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws, among his relatives.
The celebration of life for Muenzen is scheduled for Thursday between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at St. Luke Parish at 265 West Mill Road, with a funeral mass on Friday, October 1, starting at 10 a.m. Masks are required for services and “in Dr. Chris’ mind, the Muenzen family strongly encourages those who enter the church to be vaccinated,” according to his obituary.
Her family has asked for donations in her memory to be made to the Long Valley First Aid Squad at www.lvfas.org.
