Port of Baltimore sustained for miles on Tuesday; Adds Business Amid Shipping Crisis – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Traffic was at a standstill at the Port of Baltimore on Tuesday, with the supply chain crisis showing no signs of abating.

Fortunately, port officials say container ships are waiting in limbo at the Port of Los Angeles, there are no backlogs here, and business is being redirected to Baltimore.

Long queues and a lot of impatience.

“With this save it is difficult for us truckers to move on,” said Marvin Mangum.

Marvin Mangum was one of dozens of truck drivers in stationary traffic in the port of Baltimore on Tuesday.

“It has a lot to do with all the containers that are on the west coast, they’re all starting to come in. Now that has supported us, ”Mangum said.

The trucks have been backed up for hours, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

At present, there is no major backlog of ships at the Port of Baltimore. In fact, port officials say that amid the shipping crisis, they added business.

“We’re doing really well in Maryland,” said William Doyle.

Maryland Port Authority executive director William Doyle says he hopes to take advantage of the backlog in California to attract more ships here. He says that in the past 14 months 23 huge container ships have been hijacked halfway to come here because they knew they could get in, be unloaded and go back to sea quickly.

“Your retailers and your small businesses are both saying, why do we have to go to Los Angeles or Long Beach? Should we use other ports across the country? “And I think we see it now,” Doyle said.

In stores like 10,000 villages in Fells Point.

“We have things coming from all over like Bangladesh, India, Kenya,” said Alberto Macias.

Alberto Macias says so far that they haven’t felt any major problems. The owner planned ahead and stocked up on inventory.

“I hope things will work out. But if not, we have enough material to get by, ”Macias said.

But he says there is always growing concern ahead of the holidays.

“If we don’t get this thing, we don’t get or we want to get it, that’s okay. I think people at the end of the day are understanding, ”Macias said.

Unloading ships is only the first step in the import supply chain. All this cargo has to be transported in trucks or trains.
